Columns to Karlsruhe

Heavy transport. Lifting and hoisting. Making connections. Building bridges. Sometimes literally! At Royal Wagenborg, the most unique projects consist of thinking and combining. The best equipment only becomes really invaluable when it is used smartly. That’s because heavy transport often means precision: even when this involves constructions of (many) tonnes. Whatever your transport needs are: Wagenborg is the partner in special transport, heavy lifting and crane rental. We think in terms of solutions to get further. With modern equipment and an international network of transport specialists. Through own engineering, we develop smart new applications.

This proved once again to be true when Royal Wagenborg was asked to transport two large columns from the customers’ fabrication yard in Kleve up to the foundation at the Miro refinery in Karlsruhe, Germany’s largest fuel refinery.

The first column, a vacuum column measuring 41m in length, 7,2m in width, 6,6m in height and 156 tonnes in weight, was transported by means of modular trailers in a dolly configuration. The second column, a TOP1 column measuring 11,5m in length, 5,4m in width, 5,5m in height and 34 tonnes in weight, was transported with a 4-axle truck in combination with a 7-axle semi low loader.

Both of the columns were transported by barge from Emmerich to Karlsruhe, loaded and unloaded by a RORO operation and finally transported until under the crane hook at the refinery jobsite.

For the lifting and installing of both columns one of our LR1750 - 750 tonnes - crawler cranes was mobilized at the jobsite. Together with a 250 tonnes mobile crane as a tailing crane the columns were lifted in a vertical position and subsequently positioned onto their foundation by the LR1750.

Again this project is a fine example of Wagenborg’s experience in safely performing factory to foundation projects.
