“I got a summer job with Wagenborg when I was 17. I am now ten years older and have worked as a trainee and helmsman on various Wagenborg vessels: a couple of A types, as well as the Bothniaborg, Erieborg, Elbeborg and Rijnborg. I then came on to the Kroonborg, first as Material Coordinator and now as second officer. I’m actually a real Wagenborg baby…!
Although I thought merchant shipping was a real adventure, I did actually want to see something new. I therefore made a conscious decision to transfer from merchant shipping to the offshore sector.
Although I’m not sailing round the world anymore, just in the North Sea, it’s still a world of difference! The work is completely different. What’s more, I’m now working as a Junior DPO on the only DP vessel in the Wagenborg fleet! The Kroonborg is really the tops in terms of Dynamic Positioning capabilities. Although I don’t have anything to compare it with, the time differences between the input and feedback on the DP system are great! I’m really spoilt as far as that’s concerned. So I certainly don’t have any regrets about my choice. I now also have a more pleasant on-duty/on leave schedule than before. Whereas I was used to being away from home for several months at a time, I now have four weeks off every four weeks.
The routine and the regular rota make planning a lot easier – for my girlfriend as well.
What is the best thing I have experienced here? One day, we had set down several people on a platform. The weather was peaceful and calm, so nothing to worry about. Suddenly, the wind whipped up and kept rising to such an extent that we worried whether these people would be able to get back on board again. However, the Kroonborg proved it could cope with rougher weather. And I certainly got a kick out of that!”
