The green connection

Recently, Wagenborg had an important role in a special project: the transportation and installation of a bicycle and pedestrian bridge called “de Netkous”. This bridge is part of the project “green connection” which will connect the south of Rotterdam with the green area outside the city. With a length of almost 200 m, the bridge will cross the Betuwe rail track and span the A15 highway.

From Flushing to Rotterdam

The bridge was transported to Rotterdam in two sections. These sections were driven onto a barge by SPMTs at the manufacturer’s site in Flushing. These SPMTs were configured in two dolly sets of six axle lines each, double connected, with a power pack unit. The pontoon left Flushing in the direction of the ECT City Terminal in Rotterdam. Here, two sheerlegs took care of unloading the sections and put them in storage.

Exceptional transport on highway A15

During the night the bridge sections were transported from the ECT City Terminal over the nearby flyover to the construction site along the A15. Due to this exceptional transport, all access roads to and from the A15 were completely closed off. The sections were transported by two sixteen axle line conventional trailers. Despite the limited driving space - especially in the first tight corner while leaving the terminal - the Wagenborg truck drivers showed their craftsmanship by manoeuvring the bridge sections safely and accurately to the construction site.

Installing the bridge sections

Over the next two nights, the southern and northern bridge sections were successively installed onto their foundations. During these operations, the A15 was completely closed between Vaanplein and Benelux. For the lifting job, Wagenborg used two 500-tonne mobile cranes and a Demag CC2200 crawler crane. The crawler crane was positioned in the centre and the mobile cranes on the other side. The bridge sections were manoeuvred by a SPMT from the temporary storage location to the crane hooks with a configuration identical to the operations in Flushing. Then the cranes lifted the sections to their final position on the foundations. Safe, easy and accurate. A great project with an impressive transport and lifting job for a striking bridge!
